A single page, from the bottom of a drawer.

Late Autumn, 555.

Despite my calls, we have not yet got a competant military, but we have found some of the demon metal in the caverns below the forges, and production of armor and weapons has started.

The sight of it drove one of the metal smiths insane, and he threw himself into The Funnel, but he has been replaced by Kadol, an immigrant blacksmith. She lost her husband and child in the last attack and states that she no longer wishes to see the surface.

We lost over 20 in the last attack, but the next time they come, they won’t be so lucky.

If my blog was more focused on a particular topic, titles would be easier to come up with.

Gave blood yesterday, it was interesting. Signed up to do it again next time too, my arm kinda aches today and I think it’s bruising, but it’s all good apart from that.

There’s a new Morrisons here, taking over where Netto was, nice to have somewhere to shop other than Tesco. (The Tesco here is terrible, no competition I suppose) It only opened on Monday but we looked earlier, and it was chock full of pensioners, just… Standing, annoyingly, or walking the wrong way. Anything’s better than Netto, although I don’t know where I’ll buy my massive boxes of broken biscuits now!

Been busy lately, catching up with college work, not much else going on. Playing Dwarf Fortress, just got my first goblin seige, all of them riding mounts, several riding mounts that could fly over my pitiful little walls! I survived, but my milita commander lost a leg and another guy lost an arm, and my alpaca and rabbit farm was decimated.

Bought the second book, haven’t read it yet though, guess I’ll go do that.

Hmp

Ender’s Game was a pretty cool book.

day 19 – favourite song from a game

The Super Meat Boy soundtrack is pretty awesome, I managed to get the whole thing for free (without pirating it!) so that’s kinda cool. I really like the monologue at the start of A Reckless Disregard for Gravity too, although I can’t find a decent version of it and my copy appears to have been corrupted by GLaDOS. The original Pokemon music holds a special place in my heart too.

I think Super Meat Boy has the best game music I’ve heard in a long time.

I think I dislocated my little finger or something, I hit it as I was going downstairs and 3 days later it still hurts, doesn’t look bruised or anything, just hurts when I bend it. Annoyingness.

Got back into Dwarf Fortress (Also OpenTTD, but trains are hard) my first fortress was wiped out by the very first goblin ambush, because I hadn’t bothered to hook up the drawbridge yet. There’s now bee-hives, and birds produce eggs!

Which reminds me, I went into the garden yesterday to retrieve the kids next doors football and ended up giving them all eggs and letting them pet Hermia. Thorax is also dyed purple at the moment because Bella attacked him and pulled out some feathers, and I had a purple anti-peck spray I’d never had a chance to test out. He ran away when I was trying to catch him, but went all docile and wimpy once I’d got him in my arms. He does the chicken head-bob thing!

First of May!

First of May, first of May, outdoor… Ahem, right.

Nothing much happened recently. Emmy’s finally no longer on heat, but Bella is. She was 10 in March, how can she still manage it! She’s being a right pain with it anyway, I hope that when she’s gone, none of the other dogs come on, because I would like to be able to take them for a walk some time this summer.

I found a dip-pen downstairs and a little bottle of ink, (Sheaffer Peacock Blue, it’s a pretty colour) the nib is rusty, but it writes ok, and the pen is glass, so I might buy a couple more nibs for it.  Have had a couple of days fun playing with it anyway.

Think I’ve almost finished the Vatta’s War set (What’s published, anyway) ordered the last one earlier, I guess once I’m done with that I’ll have to see what else she’s written. I really need a new bookcase in here…

Been trying to spend more time downstairs, if I don’t it basically becomes somewhere to walk through, and only the dogs do anything down there. Set up the computer on the big telly and stuff, ordered a game controller and then spent two days trying to find drivers for it. (These are the only ones that worked, original xbox controller and Windows 7) XBCD was useless. At leas the xbox to USB cable I spliced together a while ago works. (I previously got a controller for £1 at a carboot but it was broken)

Ragnarok Online is now free, I downloaded it and took a look around… It was depressing, nobody I knew was still there that I could see (Just checked again, nothin) I don’t know what I was expecting, nothing really I guess. In my head it’s like he’s not really dead, he’s just gonna log on and be like, “hi, sorry I wasn’t around” or something. I know it’s stupid. I miss him every day…

-_-

Made some biscuits earlier, they’re not bad. Lent’s over, I can eat chcolate again I guess, not that I was doing it for lent but it was around the same time. I had some hot chocolate and white-chocolate biscuits, but I think I’m gonna keep not eating it, it just annoys me. Terence bought me some beeswax banana hand-cream (not what I’d normally go for but it is nice) and a box of chocolate seashells for my birthday, and we’re working on getting a greenhouse.

Things are ok!

Ramblings

So! You wanted book reviews? You get book reviews!

Books!

Wise Man’s Fear

Over 900 pages and totally awesome, if rather heavy. I think he’s improved his writing style since The Name of the Wind, he doesn’t foreshadow as much and the characters didn’t feel quite as one-dimensional, it kept me reading and I finished it in around a week. Now I just have to wait four years for the third book. :(

It was worth the wait and is worth picking up if you liked the first one! Also a good substitute for weights and/or coffee tables. Maybe wait for a paperback if you’re not 100% sure…

The Hunger Games Trilogy

Got the first book a while back but never felt compelled to pick up the other two, but I saw them in a charity shop the other day and grabbed them and read them in a day each. Not bad, better than I was expecting, they kept me reading, but I don’t think I’ll end up reading them again.

Inside Out

Reminded me a lot of The City of Ember. I liked it, the twist at the end was interesting, but I don’t feel compelled to pick up the second book (unhelpfully named Outside In), I’m happy to leave it where it is. But if I saw it in a charity shop I would grab and read it.

Black Book of Secrets

Grabbed this one for 99p because I liked the cover, and because it’d been there over a week. Not what I was expecting but pretty good, the author kept changing tenses though and it often got difficult to tell who was talking about who.

(Got distracted browsing Amazon at this point, and huh, there’s a new Terry Pratchett coming out? I thought he was done… How is he anyway?)

The Fire Eaters

Picked this up along with The Black Book of Secrets. Jesus. It’s all about waiting for the nuclear bombs to wipe us all out, a cheery book. I read to the end and it wasn’t terrible, but I don’t think I’ll end up reading it again.

The Vatta’s War books.

Waiting for book 3 to arrive, awesomeness, but damn I wanna watch Firefly again now. Maybe I’ll go downstairs and do that…

TV
Game of Thrones

Whee, watched this last night and it’s making me wanna read the books again, next one is on tonight in the US, so tomorrow here! Gives me a reason to sit downstairs and watch it on the big telly.

Doctor Who

First ep of the new series was last night, not bad, but damn that was a cruel cliffhanger.

Games
Portal 2

whee awesomeness!

Also recently got back into Defense Grid, which is also awesome!

yeah

Finished the book about a week after it arrived, it was awesome… Since then I’ve read 4-5 kids books and am up to book 3 in the Vatta’s War series.

Just trying to catch up on homework and stuff, sorry this has been kinda sparse lately.

muu

Uncle John died last Tuesday, the funeral is on Monday, Asbestosis.

Nothin much to say apart from that.

Whee

Wise Man’s Fear arrived last night, don’t expect much out of me for a couple of days.

Oh yeah, I promised a post didn’t I.

:p Sorry I’ve been absent, college got hectic all of a sudden and then I re-discovered Minecraft and whoops, here I am. I’ll try and get back into daily postings, gonna go back and edit some of the songs I copped out on, like the one from a movie. I haven’t actually been listening to much music lately, been busy doing other things that it interferes with.

Songs!

day 18 – the first song I heard from a band I love

That’s a big one. A lot of the songs I’ve got are ones Onni sent me, like the Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds one that I did a few posts back.

So I’m going for Butthole Surfers – Pepper

Saw the lyrics under somebodys avatar on SomethingAwful, followed it and ended up there. Good AudioSurf music.

Things I have done this week:

Made my AHK alarm clock even more awesome. (Variables!) It’s much easier to edit the time and stuff now, I really should try programming properly again, I’m sure I’d be good at it once I got into it, but if I don’t have something I want to make I just get distracted and forget…

We built an awesome castle on Minecraft! Here is my screenshots folder! You can’t really see the castle but it’s cool! I’ll take more pictures later.

Sent off Strawberry Magic, this CD burner is kinda iffy, maybe I shouldn’t have bought the cheapest one… Also sent Chibi a birthday present (joint with Tera) which he will install himself without wimping out. <3 Kirrus bought me Sanctum, so I got him a book. Sanctum is fun if a little short at the moment. Back to Minecraft!
