day 19 – favourite song from a game

day 19 – favourite song from a game

The Super Meat Boy soundtrack is pretty awesome, I managed to get the whole thing for free (without pirating it!) so that’s kinda cool. I really like the monologue at the start of A Reckless Disregard for Gravity too, although I can’t find a decent version of it and my copy appears to have been corrupted by GLaDOS. The original Pokemon music holds a special place in my heart too.

I think Super Meat Boy has the best game music I’ve heard in a long time.

I think I dislocated my little finger or something, I hit it as I was going downstairs and 3 days later it still hurts, doesn’t look bruised or anything, just hurts when I bend it. Annoyingness.

Got back into Dwarf Fortress (Also OpenTTD, but trains are hard) my first fortress was wiped out by the very first goblin ambush, because I hadn’t bothered to hook up the drawbridge yet. There’s now bee-hives, and birds produce eggs!

Which reminds me, I went into the garden yesterday to retrieve the kids next doors football and ended up giving them all eggs and letting them pet Hermia. Thorax is also dyed purple at the moment because Bella attacked him and pulled out some feathers, and I had a purple anti-peck spray I’d never had a chance to test out. He ran away when I was trying to catch him, but went all docile and wimpy once I’d got him in my arms. He does the chicken head-bob thing!

Ramblings

So! You wanted book reviews? You get book reviews!

Books!

Wise Man’s Fear

Over 900 pages and totally awesome, if rather heavy. I think he’s improved his writing style since The Name of the Wind, he doesn’t foreshadow as much and the characters didn’t feel quite as one-dimensional, it kept me reading and I finished it in around a week. Now I just have to wait four years for the third book. :(

It was worth the wait and is worth picking up if you liked the first one! Also a good substitute for weights and/or coffee tables. Maybe wait for a paperback if you’re not 100% sure…

The Hunger Games Trilogy

Got the first book a while back but never felt compelled to pick up the other two, but I saw them in a charity shop the other day and grabbed them and read them in a day each. Not bad, better than I was expecting, they kept me reading, but I don’t think I’ll end up reading them again.

Inside Out

Reminded me a lot of The City of Ember. I liked it, the twist at the end was interesting, but I don’t feel compelled to pick up the second book (unhelpfully named Outside In), I’m happy to leave it where it is. But if I saw it in a charity shop I would grab and read it.

Black Book of Secrets

Grabbed this one for 99p because I liked the cover, and because it’d been there over a week. Not what I was expecting but pretty good, the author kept changing tenses though and it often got difficult to tell who was talking about who.

(Got distracted browsing Amazon at this point, and huh, there’s a new Terry Pratchett coming out? I thought he was done… How is he anyway?)

The Fire Eaters

Picked this up along with The Black Book of Secrets. Jesus. It’s all about waiting for the nuclear bombs to wipe us all out, a cheery book. I read to the end and it wasn’t terrible, but I don’t think I’ll end up reading it again.

The Vatta’s War books.

Waiting for book 3 to arrive, awesomeness, but damn I wanna watch Firefly again now. Maybe I’ll go downstairs and do that…

TV
Game of Thrones

Whee, watched this last night and it’s making me wanna read the books again, next one is on tonight in the US, so tomorrow here! Gives me a reason to sit downstairs and watch it on the big telly.

Doctor Who

First ep of the new series was last night, not bad, but damn that was a cruel cliffhanger.

Games
Portal 2

whee awesomeness!

Also recently got back into Defense Grid, which is also awesome!

Oh yeah, I promised a post didn’t I.

:p Sorry I’ve been absent, college got hectic all of a sudden and then I re-discovered Minecraft and whoops, here I am. I’ll try and get back into daily postings, gonna go back and edit some of the songs I copped out on, like the one from a movie. I haven’t actually been listening to much music lately, been busy doing other things that it interferes with.

Songs!

day 18 – the first song I heard from a band I love

That’s a big one. A lot of the songs I’ve got are ones Onni sent me, like the Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds one that I did a few posts back.

So I’m going for Butthole Surfers – Pepper

Saw the lyrics under somebodys avatar on SomethingAwful, followed it and ended up there. Good AudioSurf music.

Things I have done this week:

Made my AHK alarm clock even more awesome. (Variables!) It’s much easier to edit the time and stuff now, I really should try programming properly again, I’m sure I’d be good at it once I got into it, but if I don’t have something I want to make I just get distracted and forget…

We built an awesome castle on Minecraft! Here is my screenshots folder! You can’t really see the castle but it’s cool! I’ll take more pictures later.

Sent off Strawberry Magic, this CD burner is kinda iffy, maybe I shouldn’t have bought the cheapest one… Also sent Chibi a birthday present (joint with Tera) which he will install himself without wimping out. <3 Kirrus bought me Sanctum, so I got him a book. Sanctum is fun if a little short at the moment. Back to Minecraft!

WordPress is a bit of a pain about embedding videos…

Wrote this up last night and then forgot to post it.

day 05 – a song that reminds me of someone

Chibi – MSI – Stupid Motherfucker

Onni – Nick Cave – Nature Boy
I remember him sending me this, among of a lot of other songs.

I’ve always been bad at admitting I listen to music, it’s always just been easier to say “nah” then “yeah I like that” I guess because if I say “yeah” then I feel I have to justify it. I’m trying to get over that though. (One of the reasons I’m doing this and sticking with the last.fm)

Bought a new DS, well, preowned, but new to me. It’s turquoise! Got Pokemon with it and whee it’s fun! Ended up getting it from Game, the DSes were £10 more expensive but Pokemon was free, so it came out to the same price, only I have a reward card there.

I like it so far, it’s Pokemon, not much more to say, but I like the way they’ve gone with this version.

Could be interesting. I don’t think I have a favorite song, it changes depending on my mood, but I guess at the moment these two are vying for top spot: The Butthole Surfers: Pepper and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds: Today’s Lesson.

I tidied up the garden today, dug over the two beds, picked up the plastic greenhouse from where the winds a few weeks ago had left it. Spent about two hours on it I guess, it looks better now. The apple tree has buds on! While I was digging the two beds Emmy decided to help, she started off by digging with me, but then ended up just rolling in it. I had to hose her down before I could even take her into the house to shower her. When the plastic greenhouse fell over it left mud everywhere, to the point you could probably grow plants on the patio without pots, so I hosed all that away into the beds and Emmy helped there too by drinking it and rolling in the mush whenever she got the chance.

Sophie stood in the kitchen and barked.

It was frosty this morning, all the water was frozen and there was about a 10ft visibility due to heavy fog, but by the time I got home a couple of hours later I could work in the garden without a coat on, it’s improving fast!

Been playing the SpaceChem demo today and watching s05 of Dexter, went into college but only had one lesson, CAD, which is pretty fun. Got to play with PLCs on Tuesday, making lights go on and off and stuff, fun fun. I wouldn’t mind doing more of that. Ink cartridges arrived so I can use my fountain pen again! I think when these run out I might move onto bottled ink but we’ll see. Apparently they’ve discontinued making that pen, shame, I was considering buying another one.

I finished the Kethani book Kirrus sent me, not bad although I kept waiting for a twist or revelation that never appeared. (Which I suppose is a twist in itself)  it says at the end they were mostly short stories published at different times, and that makes it make a bit more sense. I liked it.

Also finished Oath of Gold (Thankyou :D) it got more interesting towards the end even if it did make me a bit uncomfortable reading it on the bus, considering buying the next one and I will read more of her stuff.

I never did finish the second Dwarves book, I think that’s up next.

Free!

College is over until after Christmas! I added £10 to my Steam wallet and have been spending it on games over the past couple of weeks. (Roughly £1.50 to £2.00 a game) Things could be worse!

Super Meat Boy is awesome, I can only stand playing it in small bursts, but it’s still good! I just wish it wouldn’t crash quite so randomly.  Normally right after I’ve got a bandage and I’m on the winning lap too.

Bob Came In Pieces is a very cute little puzzle game, it’s on sale today and tomorrow for something like £1.75, you should check out the trailer on Steam. Zombie Driver is on sale too but I don’t think I’ll bother getting it. I have too many games already.

I bought the second Humble Indie Pack, it’s a “pay what you want” sale but if you pay under something like 5p, Paypal eats it all and then charges them extra. I’ve not had a chance to play with it yet but I’m building up a nice little pile of installers, I’d been meaning to buy Braid so that’s good. The first one suddenly appeared on Steam a week or so ago, about a year after the first “pay what you want” sale, and everyone who’d bought it got a code, which is pretty awesome.

I got shatter, which is is Breakout but it’s not bad. The Steam achievement for it is impossible but oh well.  I’ve had some fun playing with the story mode and the music is decent.

There’s a few games I’m watching out for next year. Rock of Ages looks pretty cool, Diablo 3 I haven’t been paying much attention to but I will grab when it’s released. Onni forced me to play through D2 and it was fun. Portal 2 is a given.

Found this Dungeon Keeper remake thing earlier that looks worth keeping an eye on

Some of the stuff I ordered for Christmas still hasn’t arrived, but I think it may be at the post office, I have to go out anyway. Wish whoever is delivering some stuff (A dedicated courier, not Royal Mail) would stop throwing stuff over the back gate into the garden, I don’t see it before I and all the dogs and the chickens tread on it and that’s no fun.

Thorax is developing a magnificent tail, him and Abigail look like this now, they’re much bigger than the Black Rocks, but I guess that’s because they’re designed as a dual purpose breed as opposed to just egg layers. He’s starting to develop some good behaviour, he protects the girls from the dogs now (Sophie charges them sometimes out of sheer excitement and he stands in front of them and pecks at her now, which serves her right) and he won’t eat before they do now, he just stands and looks manly.

It’s all fun.

Tidied my desk and have managed to keep it that way for almost a whole week.

T_T Why did I bother.

I have.. Napoleon Total War. I have Just Cause 2, I have Dwarf Fortress and Minecraft. I have 60 games in Steam, a lot of which are awesome.

And what am I doing?

I’m sitting here playing a browser game, I have Theme Hospital open (<3 you DOSBox)  and I just managed to find a working version of Chip’s Challenge.

Why did I bother buying an awesome computer?

I should go find a copy of Lemmings.

Migraines seriously knock me out

Been playing Recettear, had the demo going on the laptop but it was playing at 15fps, I love this computer.

Finally managed to get a case fan in it, thought the old mounts would do but they’d all perished, and I ended up sitting with the case open for a week because it was getting incredibly hot. Tempted to buy a second fan for it, even though it runs 20 degrees cooler than my old computer.

Having a computer that can handle sleep mode is fun! The old one just stuttered and refused to come out until you did a hard shut down. Windows 7 is pretty unobtrusive too.

Not sure when college starts, went to the induction day and it all seems fun, hope I can get a bus pass because £4/day bus fare is painful. It’s probably gonna be a full time course, a level 3 diploma over two years, and an NVQ as well to fill the rest of the week. (Apparently the NVQ is mostly practical and the diploma is mostly academic)

Looks fun anyway!

*stumbles in*

It is way too hot. I feel like I’m breathing the heat, it’s kinda annoying. I sweat through my shirt just sitting outside, not tried riding my bike in it. I know it’s cool compared to some places but we were rolling in snow not that long ago!

Bees look kinda fun. Also, circular saws.

I have toooo many games to play!

Tropico 3 (Seems kinda like SimCity)
Altitude (Heavy Weapons Delux. WITH PLANES)
Gonna buy Napoleon Total War when I get round to it, to see what all the fuss is about. I think I have Rome sitting around somewhere too, maybe I should try that first.
Forum I go on recommended Afterlife, and I managed to find the discs after only 10 minutes of searching. It works in DosBox but the sound is a little dodgy.
Creatures whee~
I bought the Humble Indie pack while it was cheap.
A RECKLESS DISREGARD FOR GRAVITY

I really need to stop buying games.

Ordered the second “A Song of Ice and Fire” book. I love Amazon. Uhh.

Damn it’s hot.

Got a speedometer thing for my bike, working out how to set it up because the instructions are terrible.

Guess I’ll play Altitude for a bit and then go outside and annoy the chickens.

Fuckk

Here, this, go. GoG is an awesome site and they should work on whatever OS you’re running right now. They even come with manuals.

I shall not sleep tonight.
